Saskia's Story

Saskia* was looking for part-time work, but didn’t have much motivation. She was lacking inspiration and the desire to work – she spent most of her time at home, not doing much.

A change of mindset

Saskia* was looking for part-time work, but didn’t have the motivation. She was lacking the inspiration and desire to work, and got by financially by relying on the benefit. She spent most of her time at home, not doing much. She was being supported by LinkPeople with her housing and at the time, her daughter was living with her.

When she was introduced to the Workwise employment consultant, she thought they were “just another case manager” and didn’t feel the need to engage in what was being offered.

Saskia’s employment consultant didn’t give up and persevered with reaching out to Saskia. Even if there was no answer to their calls, they would send a message to follow up, sometimes suggesting to go for coffee, or just to touch base. Saskia appreciated this personal approach and said “it made me feel more human”.

After a while, Saskia agreed to start on her employment journey with Workwise. Together with her employment consultant she prepared her CV and started to think about what she wanted from a job.

When Saskia got worried about an interview, thinking that the employer wouldn’t be looking for “someone like me” her employment consultant would reassure her, saying that the worst thing they could do was say no.

On one occasion, Saskia went for an interview at a local venue with a bar and restaurant. She didn’t know what to wear, and was feeling very nervous about the interview. At the same time, she thought to herself that she actually wanted this job!

Saskia entered the establishment and as soon as she walked in, she noticed how welcoming the staff were. She was offered a work trial the following night, and successfully got the job!

At one of the first functions Saskia worked at, people came into the venue from all walks of life. The employer recalls how Saskia was immediately able to connect with all sections of the community. She showed a special skillset to naturally connect with people. This was the raw ingredient they were looking for.

Saskia’s employer is now looking at duty manager responsibilities for her, and they look forward to seeing her journey continue.

In Saskia’s own words

“It’s hard work, but it’s such a good team. I’m so fortunate to have this job, I’m so lucky. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to work, especially after not having a job for so many years. My employer is the coolest boss.”

Having a job has fully changed me as a person. It’s quite emotional. It doesn’t quite feel real but it’s a cool feeling. I’ll do whatever I can to keep it this way. I don’t want to go backwards.

“I’m more myself here. I’ve grown into a better version of myself, a version that I didn’t know about myself.”
